Image and Logic

Culture, Deep in the Machines of Microphysics

Peter Galison follows the local cultures of theorists, experimentalists and instrumentalists in 20th century particle physics from dust research in meteorolgy to the cloud and bubble chambers of big science. He gives a minute account of the “social catastrophy” that was CERN in terms of communication amongst disciplines but gives examples of emerging languages or “pidgins” that facilitate new, productive blends of image, logic and instrument.
